Does your Pet have Strong Bones?

Arthritis is a common condition affecting pets. The cause of arthritis are many: starting form genetic bone malformations and a poor diet (even overfeeding in some cases) to age and injury. Don't let your pet suffer needlessly: here are some ways to prevent, detect and manage this painful ailment.

Don't ignore the symptoms. As Dr Samuel, a well-known vet in Singapore, points out, "You will know your pet has bone problems of you find him having difficulty getting up or climbing stairs. If he favours a particular limb and/or is sleeping excessively and/or is gaining weight, you should treat them as symptoms.

Take your pet to the vet immediately. Your pet may prescribe certain pain killers. Remember medicines containing steroids must be avoided. Also, make sure you adhere to the prescribed dosage. Do not indulge in self-medication. "Try warm compresses on the affected joint for 5 to 15 mins each time, 3 to 4 times daily," suggest Samuel.

Feed him well. To prevent this condition, a nutritious diet and regular activities are must. Look after an arthritic pet with vitamins and mineral supplements and Omega-3 fatty acids (as suggested by your vet). Complement your pet's diet with walking for 20 to 30 mins twice a day: this will help maintain weight and counter joint stiffness. "However, avoid exercise for too long and certainly dont't expect your pet to run or jump. Also, respect your pet's speed. Don't push him, or else he will stress himself out to please you and cause more harm to his body," says Samuel.

Sometimes I think that people forget that pets can suffer from the same afflictions as humans. Thank you for reminding us to keep in mind things like arthritis.
